THE CONVICTION IN COURAGE: FINDING THE BALANCE BETWEEN FEAR AND RISK

JUDGES FEEDBACK:

JUDGE 1: “I really enjoyed your performance, MaShaAllah!

Your piece did a great job of portraying this year's theme. I loved how you introspected in this piece. The vulnerability and exposure of yourself really came through in your piece.”

JUDGE 2: “I enjoyed reading your piece. You told a story of something that many have experienced in past few years. I think you did a good job describing how it felt in your piece. So a few points were taken off because you needed more stage presence. Spoken Word is a performance, so definitely in future keep that in mind. Keep writing spoken words, you have. great potential. Good job.”

I loved how you painted a picture and told a story with your piece, how you brought in current events. You piece was well written, good use of vocabulary.

I would highly suggest adding variety of tones and speeds to your piece. During more powerful lines, add some stress in your voice. Project your voice to catch the audience's attention.”

JUDGE 2: “Overall the spoken word was written really well. I like that it was clear and easy to follow. I think in terms of performance your pronunciation was good but you could have included more dramatics. You want to keep the audience engaged. In terms of the actual content of the spoken word was beautifully written. I really enjoyed reading through your piece, great job.”

TRUSTING THE PROCESS: CONTENTMENT THROUGH ADVERSITY

JUDGES FEEDBACK:

JUDGE 1: “Great performance. Was able to follow along with the content by the way it was spoken. Well written and spoken.”

JUDGE 1: “Well done! Great metaphors and figurative language. A little under six minutes, but very well structured, attention-grabbing tone, and very relevant. Words clear, appropriate pitch and great connections to history and religion. However, participant was not appropriately dressed (wearing a t-shirt).”

JUDGE 1: “Incredibly creative. I loved the way the competitor mentioned history through out the piece and related it back to the present. The whole spoken word flowed beautifully and was easy to follow. Unfortunately I had to take points away for nonprofessional attire.”

TRUSTING THE PROCESS: CONTENTMENT THROUGH ADVERSITY

JUDGE 1: “Well written and spoken. I like the ways things were bought into light.  I definitely agree it is different spiritual journey for many. I liked how the process and journey was incorporated into the spoken word alongside the struggle.”

JUDGE 1: “Clearly identifies name several times, piece is only about three minutes long. Great tone of voice, great rhyming. Great connections back to Islam, very relevant to the theme.”

JUDGE 1: “Competitor had a good idea but execution wasn't fully there. She seemed a little nervous and even with full volume the piece was hard to hear and didn't flow as nicely as it could have.”
